Getting There
Wherever you are travelling from, there is a convenient way to reach Byron Bay, Bangalow and Federal, whether travelling by air, car, coach or rail.
Air
Access to Byron Bay by air from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide has been made easier with an increase in direct fights to Coolangatta/Gold Coast airport. Air New Zealand will soon commence direct flights from Auckland to Coolangatta along with Virgin Blue commencing direct flights from Canberra. Since the upgrade to the Pacific Highway, transfer from Coolangatta to Byron Bay is now an easy 45 minutes.
Many international flights now also arrive into Brisbane airport with regular transfers available from the airport to Byron Bay via shuttle bus, coach, private car rental or luxury transfer.
Alternatively fly to Ballina/Byron airport from Sydney on Virgin, Jetstar or Rex Air (flights daily) or direct flights from Melbourne with Jetstar (three times a week). Weemala is approximately 25 minutes north of Ballina/Byron Airport. Rental cars are available at both Gold Coast and Ballina Airports.
Transport Car
Byron Bay is located on the easternmost point in Australia, on the Far North Coast of NSW. It is approximately 2 hours drive south of the capital of Queensland, Brisbane, 1½ hours drive south of Surfers Paradise, and 10 hours drive north of Sydney.
Dual carriageway upgrades will soon be complete from Brisbane to Byron Bay on the north-south Pacific Highway June which will reduce the drive to as little as 1½ hours. Plans are advanced for the upgrade of the highway south to Ballina. East-west regional highways open the Shire to hinterland destinations.
Coach and Rail
A range of private transport companies provide regional passengers services for the resident population as well as airport shuttle services for tourists.
With its network of trains and coaches, Countrylink provides safe and reliable transport from all parts of NSW, Melbourne and Brisbane to Byron Bay. CountryLink provides a daily service from Sydney to Byron Bay via train to Grafton or Casino and then bus to Byron Bay. Refer to www.countrylink.info for timetables, fares and online booking
